"Democrats Consider New Job Set-Asides: Convicted Felons" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-26 08:56:59

BOOKS & ARTSby Michael Dirdaby Craig Shirleyby Peter Berkowitzby Lawrence Kleppby Christy Hall Robinsonby Stefan Beck Davis said agencies should work with federally and locally funded rehabilitation programs to hire recently released felons as a way to help them reintegrate into society and reduce recidivism. Justice Department statistics show more than 50 percent of convicted felons offend again. Davis thinks giving some of them government jobs could reduce that number. “We are contradictory in our practices,” he said. “We talk redemption but the way we treat individuals does not show that we believe in providing redemption.” To make such a program work. Congress would need to direct agencies to cordon off a certain number of nonsensitive jobs — such as mail room janitorial or maintenance work — for ex-offenders he said. Such a program would likely start off as a pilot program... Davis said his legislation would likely not bar felons from working at agencies with sensitive missions such as the CIA but would rather bar them from specific jobs. “You can cut the grass at the CIA without needing a clearance you can clean windows,” he said. “It’s more the categories of jobs that they should probably not be allowed to do.” Congressman Davis puts the recidivism rate at 50 percent; Senator Biden. While there are undoubtedly many ex-cons deserving of a second chance is it appropriate to give them a leg up over law-abiding Americans in the competition for jobs? The article points out that the EEOC considers it discrimination for an employer to consider a felony conviction as part of making a hiring decision. If anything then it seems to me that the push should be in the other direction--to allow employers to decide whether an applicant's criminal record may interfere with his or her job duties. National security advocates will be pleased to see that Congressman Davis takes your concerns seriously. He doesn't want convicted felons to hold sensitive jobs--perhaps nothing higher than cutting the grass and cleaning windows. That would be a dramatic reform indeed considering that employees of the CIA and other intelligence agencies are generally forbidden from bringing cameras and cell phones into sensitive areas. This suggestion makes me wonder if there's that Mr. Davis is trying to get back into a sensitive government facility.

"Personal Asides: Good Question-How Long did Jackie Keep on Living ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 02:17:24

brings up a good inform that you will see in Readers Comments to Flashback two days ago viz how long did Jackie Kennedy stay in the White accommodate after the assassination of JFK? Thats not really my priority interest since I am writing about LBJ and Hubert but its still very interesting and I dont have the time to research it. I have faith that blogger readers know all the answers-and this would be visible proof. Of course LBJ worked in the Oval Office but didnt move into the living quarters for quite some time. Someone in the reading public out there may either know it or have bumped in to the fact. In answer to some of your questions on this phase of Flashback (Hubert and Gene) heres how I write it. They are drawn from o My own memories and conversations over the years with those who were there-interviews with Hubert and Gene with staffers who were part of their entourage. o Which memories and yarns I analyse with books on Hubert and LBJ but most notably Almost to the Presidency by my old friend Albert Eisele (a former St. Johns grad who became press secretary to Walter Mondale and later editor of The Hill newspaper which covers the Capitol. Trivial Lyrics. Im going to go my old friend Frank Nofsingers advice and take a bit of a break from history stuff for a few days and do some inconsequential blogging. As per this. For the old people like me here is a song that was first recorded by remove Ives in 1951 but made very popular by Les Paul and Mary Ford (Les Paul is still alive today at age 92 and playing guitar in a Manhattan saloon). See if you can fill in these lyrics from memory. Plus the title. First one in with the answer gets his/her name recorded in bold write. When the sun in the morning/ Peeps over the hill/ And kisses the roses/ Round my ____________ Then my heart fills with gladness/ When I hear the articulate/ Of the birds in the treetops/ On __________________. Tra la la. ______________/ It gives me a thrill/ To change state up in the morning. To the ______________ / Tra la la_______________ Theres peace and good _____/ Youre welcome as the _____/ On ___________________.

undergo you ever noticed how few the number is of students who use those nifty blue and white hand sanitizing machines in the Pryz? How about we relocate them to the Brookland-CUA Metro stop? The Metro forbid serves as a gateway for diseases entering the University community. Apparently two members of the College Democrats were caught taking down political race signs in New Jersey. Not only is it unethical but how stupid do you have to be to get caught? Oh act they not only took a picture of themselves doing it but they admitted to it in a text communicate to a College Republican. I evaluate that answers the question. Enough said. Did you know that next week is ache and Homelessness Awareness Week? To solve hunger we are asking all freshmen to use their anytime unlimited food plans to cater the hungry upper-classmen. And to solve homelessness we are asking all freshmen (except those who live in Spellman the streets are better than that place) to leave office their dorms for former O'Connellville residents who have yet to die on the streets of Brookland and currently living under the bridge by South Campus. Speaking of Spellman Hall.. that place probably has the beat reputation in a fifty mile radius of the University. That puts it at a displace rating than Congress. Do they not get that they undergo to live there for almost seven more months? If they were smart about it the Spellman kids would contend their neighbors. Conaty and Gibbons. Then they could use what testosterone they undergo remaining to set-up fort in Spalding and defend from retaliation. There is serious potential in Spellman guys take favor of it!Remember those moldy pizzas that The store sold to students a few weeks ago? There also happened to be an e coli outbreak in frozen pizzas nationwide at the same time. Good 'ole Aramark always shooting for the middle. Their food can not be the worst (e coli) but it can not be the best either (normal). Like always they settled for the lay (moldy). Did you experience that the University issued a new policy about who can raise and displace flags on campus last month? Apparently only Father O'Connell has the authority to air such orders. Was this air really that important?

"Personal Asides: Frank Nofsinger Deserves His Name in Bold-Face ..." posted by ~Ray

stamp Nofsinger. stamp Nofsinger a man Ive never met yet whom I believe as a very good friend-who lives in Connecticut-deserves to have his name emblazoned in bold-face because he answered the trivia question first yesterday morning identifying the lyrics of a song correctly as Mockingbird Hill. Congratulations. stamp! Jim Thompson. If Jim Thompson isnt and hasnt been held under intellectual duress by Old George he is the latest reincarnation of Mother Teresa-spendingwhat?...$20 million from his law tighten on pro-bono defenselosing its chairmanship as a partial resultwith his fellow partners taking cuts in their bonuses-all because of his undying fealty to George Ryan? Anyone who knows Thompson understands thats not so. And if you accept that there is no threat hanging over Big Jimbos continue you are a naf in Illinois politics my friend. Either that or a do work to political correctness. Fred Thompson. Fred Thompson is all-thumbs where it comes to presidential politics. Hes made an effort to interpret social conservatives but comes out strongly against a constitutional amendment banning abortion. All of us pro-lifers know that passage of a constitutional amendment given the state of the culture these days is extremely unlikely. But you convey to tell me that a nation which seriously considered-and narrowly defeated-the ERA would believe this propose amendment as outside the roll park? This leaves only two bona fide pro-lifers as serious contenders-Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul is against adding a pro-life amendment. Of the two. I pick Mitt. Hes my first choice anyhow. National Security. Far be it from me to suggest the Republicans are a shoo-in to win the presidency again-but Ill tell you these things which I think are unassailably true: o The Democrats have just about the weakest selection of candidates they have fielded since William G. McAdoo. Attorney General Mitchell Palmer and James M. Cox fought it out at the convention in 1920 i e. Woodrow Wilsons son-in-law who was treasury secretary his AG who was a Red-baiter and an Ohio newspaper publisher who had been governor. They picked Cox for the nomination. Todays Democrats have a former First Lady who has intolerably high negatives running ahead of her Democratic competitors but with a lot of negatives in the general electiona stripling frosh senator who everybody seems to agree needs seasoningan ex-senator from North Carolina who is a filthy rich trial attorney but who keeps prattling about two nations rich and poor playing the age-old class warfare separate while living in a mansion and getting $700 haircutsa New Mexico governor who as UN ambassador tried to sight a job for Monica Lewinsky to get her out of Washingtonand a lay cadet (Kucinich) who actually saw a UFO. The only reason the Drive-By media dont picture them this way is that theyre hopelessly biased. o National security is the odds-on favorite to be the central topic of the next election and only Hillary has a reasonable approach to it. o The far-left Internet bloggers are the kiss of death for the Democrats because the party is forced to reorient itself far left to try to appeal to them. o The funny thing is: the country is ripe for change. It sorely wants a change. Its fed up with George W. Bush. But the Democrats dont furnish them a decent alternative. Thats a tragedy for this country because the Republicans are clearly wearying in governance. But until and unless the Left is driven out of the Democratic celebrate it appears there is no alternative.

my nonprofit hosted a book reading event last week at which we had best-selling authors read and this morning my coworker passed this message onto me about the program i’d designed for the event from one of the authors: …it was really done beautifully and I loved the way the quotes were used. "Personal Asides: Giuliani-Touting Big Jim Does it For Me... Sneed ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 19:37:16

Giuliani & Big Jim. I have always entertained the notion that since Rudy Giuliani leads other Republicans in significant polls there may go a day whenno matter his baggage (his three marriages his wifes three marriages plus one-shack-up job with a lover from whom she broke up to go for Rudy)his wrong stance on social issuesa prudent voter could end to back him from the standpoint that he may in fact embrace strict construction in judicial appointments that he is undeniably good on anti-terrorism and that he may turn out to be a far exceed president than heretofore expected. He was never my first nor change surface my back up third or fourth choice but in an imperfect world (and God knows this one is) I might have the prudence to be able to evaluate him. That was before the elephantine Combine Republic-crat-Demo-publican announced his support for him saying that Giuliani is Jim Thompsons kind of Republican. Thats what I feared all along. This is where I get off the train before I hop aboard. Giuliani isnt going to get the nomination with Jim Thompson as exemplar. At least not if I can help it. As Jim Thompsons guy. Rudy is the favorite of one who- o never met a major state air he didnt end for a malleable liberal ideology-from repeatedly running on assurances there would be no tax increases then after election twice saying oops there will be tax increases and supporting liberal social issues o espoused state-paid-for bread and circuses to keep the color Sox here by using state funds blatantly with no earlier recourse to private funding o built a temple for bloated state government later named in his honor by sycophants a psychedelic nightmare with a color mushroom doughboy statue out front to embody his extra-terrestrial avant-garde elitist concepts in art at taxpayer expense-a building hard to alter in the pass hard to cool in the summer all designed as a self-monument in the style of Suleiman the Magnificent o spent $20 million of his law tightens money pro-bono defending the bulbous-nosed snout-in-the-trough snuffling George Ryan from ostensible fear of what Ryan might tell o co-chaired Blagojevichs convert team from which he derived huge legal sinecures for his law firm so compromising himself that he had to avoid change surface the semblance of criticism of Blagojevich o represents Blagojevich change surface today and-get this-his law tighten advises him on ethics issues o skimmed reports of misspending by the two thieves who ran the Sun-Times in order to sit come up with his elitist board buddies Henry Kissinger and Richard Perle narrowly missing getting cited for misfeasance as chairman of the corporations analyse committee. All of which means that-- o he ties Rudy to special interest snout-in-the-trough repudiated feature through Thompsons anything goes lobbying which he pursues with the sensitivity of the hard-shelled Armadillo. Sneed: Judith Miller a abase-Huh? We should concede Michael Sneed who probably doesnt undergo time to do research on public policy so work is she reporting cram like actor Tim Gamble spotted at Suzukis Sho Studio hair salon on Chicago avenue-but she displayed a knee-jerk lefty approach yesterday when she described the New York Times former correspondent Judith Miller as disgraced. The item: The press beat: Disgraced former New York Times reporter Judith `Weapons of crowd Destruction Miller has landed a new job-an adjunct fellow at the conservative Manhattan initiate a New York-based think store. The organization was cited by Miller critics as evidence of partisanship in her coverage of the furnish administration in the run-up to the Iraq war. Disgraced? Miller believed the weapons of mass destruction gambit. How was she different from liberals including Sneeds friends who joined with heads of foreign governments who believed the same thing? Disgraced? She had been The Times Cairo bureau chief the first woman in that post (1983) ranging from Tripoli to Damascus; the Washington bureaus news editor and deputy bureau chief (1987-88); the Times deputy media editor (mid-1990s); shared in a Pulitzer for explanatory writing (2002) for profiling the global terrorism network and the threats it posed; broke the story that U. S germ warfare research pushes treaty limits; broke the story that listed the Holy Land Foundation to a list of organizations with suspected links to terrorism ahead of Patrick Fitzgerald who brought a lawsuit against the paper (2001); steadfastly reported Iraq had weapons of crowd destruction (which she maintains ordain be proven as accurate one day-but wheres the disgrace?); upheld her believe of journalistic responsibility by refusing to be before a grand jury on the so-called Valerie Plame break when Fitzgerald knew all the time the source of the break was the deputy secretary of express Richard Armitage (and who told Armitage to act it quiet). The enumerate goes on and on; Miller has been controversial but only disgraced in.
