"Michelle Pilecki: Catholic Bishops Decry War, But Media More ..." posted by ~Ray

Most traditional media -- the MSM corporate media whatever you want to call them -- don't take religion coverage seriously. Unless there's sex involved of course or financial finagling. Forget about the deeper discussions of the leaders of the spiritual lives of thousands even millions of Americans. So the election of a new president of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is a real yawner right? At least the is. The AP led with the "news" that the new president. Cardinal Francis George is "a defender of Catholic orthodoxy with extensive experience in Rome," tastefully burying the about his woeful mishandling of a 2005 priest/molestation case. Of course that was the lede in the NPR headline news I caught. Buried even further in the AP story and ignored by most of the media was the of the bishops' "Call for Bipartisan Cooperation on Responsible Transition in Iraq." Our nation cannot afford a shrill and shallow debate that distorts reality and reduces the options to 'cut and run' versus 'stay the course.' Instead we need a forthright discussion that begins with an honest assessment of the situation in Iraq and acknowledges both the mistakes that have been made and the signs of hope that have appeared. Most importantly an honest assessment of our moral responsibilities toward Iraq should commit our nation to a policy of responsible transition.... Our nation's military forces should remain in Iraq only as long as it takes for a responsible transition leaving sooner rather than later. This is at least the sixth statement that the bishops or their representatives have issued on Iraq since September 2002 when they raised "serious questions about the moral legitimacy of any preemptive unilateral use of military force to overthrow the government of Iraq." But at the time their words were all but lost in the avalanche of media attention to reports about the failure of some bishops to respond to reports of sexual abuse by priests. But regarding Iraq the bishops were far quicker with their qualms than they were 40 years earlier during the Vietnam war. Although they condemned the war in 1971 -- which made an impact on a middle America that often disapproved of protesting "hippies" -- their statements earlier in the war were more equivocal. which as far as I can tell is the only traditional media outlet to lead with the USCCB's latest anti-war statement. I tip my hat to religion reporter Ann Rodgers. The lists the bishops' anti-war efforts and its concerns with the millions of Iraqi refugees and the estimated 600,000 Iraqi civilians killed. This is what being "pro life" is really about not against women's health care. Surely if Miss Pilecki's complaint has to do with a lack of coverage or unfair coverage of the Catholic Church's anti-war stance by the MSM - then the Church needs to get in line with their complaints - right behind those who are disappointed in the MSM's biased reporting on the Bush Administration the Iraqi Occupation as well as minimizing the impact of Global Climate Change... I'm sorry Ms Pilecki; As a former Catholic I can tell you that as long as the Vatican refuses to 'do penance' and a helluva act of contrition over this enormous pedophile scandal and as long as the Vatican continues to embrace these archaic beliefs concerning the use of contraception(Particularly in developing countries) then there is no moral or ethical foundation strong enough to give their honorable stance on war any substance or weight. The Catholic Church needs to seriously take care of it's own house before it pontificates to others. The pope and the cardinals may be operating under some collective amnesia and state of delusion but the rest of the world is not. Tell the brothers to backoff. There's a lot of young menwho don't want to hear it. Do you understand?I'm asking you to give my menthe support they deservewhile on they are on the field of battle. Stand with US brothersif you are going to take sidesin this matter. Wow i'm impressed nice to see this bishop doesn't have his head up and alter boy's ass (sorry couldn't help myself had to include at least one clergy molestation joke). But seriously i am impressed because he is exactly right. And the problems with the media cannot be understated. A bishop protesting the war? Thats not entertaining that won't get ratings. A bishop with ties to molestation? Now THATS what people want to see.

"Catholic bishops choose their leaders" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 02:40:00

Some interesting developments from the U. S. Catholic Bishops conference in Baltimore where the bishops have elected new officers. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago (that’s him) was elected president. He is widely considered the “first among equals” among the big-city cardinal/archbishops a top thinker whose opinions count in Rome. Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson was elected vice president with Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee coming in back up. Many observers think that Dolan has a shot to be come the next archbishop of New York (although others think he is destined to get Chicago after George). Also — and this is kind of interesting — the chairmanship of a committee on canon law did not go to Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis a leading proponent of not giving Communion to pro-choice politicians like Rudy Giuliani. The seat instead went to Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Chicago. Burke has garnered national attention for his strong rest in advance of using canon 915 of the label of Canon Law to justify refusing communion to politicians who give abortion rights and his election could have been seen as an endorsement of that position. Cardinal Egan by the way is not at the meetings because as Whispers’ Rocco Palmo reports he is “recuperating from an emergency dental procedure performed over the weekend.” This entry was posted on Tuesday. "Catholic Bishops Comforted by Sexual Abuse Report" posted by ~Ray

Research falls into six categories. Terry explained: a historical overview of social and political events since 1950; recruitment and seminary training; leadership; victimization; a clinical analysis using data from three treatment centers; and a discussion of prevention and education tactics. Terry said early investigate seems to tell that the patterns of sexual abuse within the church are consistent with the experience of society as a whole. … Data so far from John Jay confirms the findings of social scientists “that command social changes have had significant force on the lives of those who are part of or closely associated with religious organizations,” she said. … Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville. Ky. said if the research bears out that the Catholic Church differed little from other organizations in the incidence of abuse he recommended offering the John Jay material to others to see if it benefits them. He also noted that because of the broad acceptance of the notion that sexual do by is a problem particularly tied to the Catholic Church it “will act some measure to overcome the myth that has developed about the church.” The findings released yesterday at the Fall Assembly of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore worried advocates for abuse victims who said they hoped that sexual do by by priests would not be played down just because other members of society did the same. “We believe that bishops and priests should be above reproach,” said Barbara Blaine president of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests or SNAP a Chicago-based organization that is in Baltimore for the assembly. … Blaine said she and other advocates are doubtful that the final inform ordain furnish an accurate account of abuse by priests because the church is paying for it. “Anytime an organization is evaluating itself it begs the challenge of whether it is truly objective,” she said. "George is not first cardinal elected bishops? president" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 23:29:08

For you trivia buffs. Cardinal Francis E. George is not the first cardinal to be elected president of the U. S bishops’ conference as is being in some places. The first was the late Cardinal John J. Krol of Philadelphia. He was elected vice president of the conference in 1966 was made a cardinal in 1967 and then was chosen president in 1971. Another cardinal who also served as president of the bishops’ conference is retired Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore but he became a cardinal in 1994 two years after his election as president.
